From NASA to ART

In 2000, Sachiko began work on a ferrofluid art project that she named “Protrude, Flow”.
Ferrofluid is a very interesting material originally developed by NASA it has now found itself been used for a whole range of devices including dampers for controlling and stabilizing large building that move around in the wind. Whats also amazing is that they have such lovely visual qualities when magnetized. The term liquid architecture is used a lot in interactive architecture based on the ideas of how architecture becomes animated by adding the 4th Dimension of Time. Sachiko has taken this idea of liquid architecture more literally with these stunning sculptures made from Ferrofluid which changes its state by the introduction of electro-magnetic waves into the fluid turning it solid. As you stand around and watch this piece, you get literally mesmerized as the ferrofluid (guided by magnets) follows its track and changes its forms.

[Mö] Candleholder

Pictures above are the 3d prototype models of my product design — “[Mö] candle holder”, which is composed by one and only one surface following the ‘mobius’ formula. The rendering below gives the image when the candle is put inside it.

There is a working-in-process version of a piece of rhino-linked script according the principle of spring system to build the surface relaxation function, which simulates the force inside tensile material generating a final form. In this 0.5 version, the relaxation for both open surface and periodic Nurbs Surface are available.

Geometry Exercise: Endless Surface

Above is the first geometric exercise done in AA_Emtech. As the utilization of component-based form in parametric architectural design, a novel component with multi-dimensional continuity has been employed into a innovative design process. Erwin Hauer, a American Sculptor who is wildly known as a proponent of Modular Constructivism, had done varieties of sculptures which inspirited architectural process a lot.
